What’s New In?

The other night, I was down the hill in my apartment where I sit to write, drinking in the last vestiges of the sun’s warmth on my back patio before it disappears behind the mountain. The Lopes family, friends of mine, came by and I invited them in, my son and his three new little brothers all running down the hill and yelling and jumping on my love seat. I had two bottles of wine chilling in my fridge, and I started opening them.

“What’s this?” the father asked, looking at the wine list.

“What do you mean?”

“This,” he pointed at the wine he had just opened, “What is that? This isn’t from my cellar.”

“I know.” I held the bottle up and smiled. “It’s from Washington. It’s from a winery in Washington.”

“Why would you put that on the list?” he said.

I smiled again. “Because I’m a winery owner in Washington.” He then proceeded to laugh at my mother for a good 30 seconds.

“It’s good, I promise,” I said as my friend joined the laughter, and I handed him the wine opener.

After a long pause, he said, “That’s okay then, we’ll have it.”

The wife of the Lopes family walked over from the kitchen. “This isn’t from the cellar?” she asked.

I smiled a third time, and held the bottle again. “No, it’s from Washington.”

“It’s from Washington?” she repeated, looking at the label again.

The husband nodded.

“I’ll have it.”

So the Lopes family enjoyed the wine. They asked questions, I smiled (although I’m not sure it was entirely for their benefit) and then they came home.

Does this scenario sound familiar? There was a point, not too long ago, in my life where people would offer to buy me wine or beer at my home. What they didn’t know was that I owned a small winery in Walla Wall
